Maverick a Strike went gold less than three weeks after its release and led directly to finley’s brit award victory for best male solo artist. The album is now certified multi-platinum. Originally released in 1997 during the heyday of the alternative UK Electro scene, Finley Quaye’s debut ‘Maverick A Strike’ struck a chord with many. Fusing Dub, Reggae, Pop, Triphop and Indie, his amalgam of styles resonated throughout the music world like no other record at the time. Tricky’s ‘Maxinquaye’ [also available on vinyl] came close. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that these two artists are family - they sure put their stamp on the sound of the Nineties. Original vinyl issues were in short supply at the time of release, making this Music On Vinyl issue a very welcome one for the fans. Finley Quaye won the Best British Male Solo Artist at the Brit Awards in 1998 and ‘Maverick a Strike’ went double-platinum. ‘Sunday Shining’, an adaptation of Bob Marley’s ‘Sun Is Shining’, led the album with its noisy guitar and grooves like strange, dubby garage rock.
