Why is a recording that was made in 1967 being released on CD over 40 years later? Well I suppose because it sounds so good! What I heard was Richie Havens singing and playing solo songs from the American folk and blues genres, it was amazing a voice of great strength and emotion and very impressive guitar playing. Richie Havens was performing in the clubs and coffee houses in and around NY Greenwich Village. If you want to hear a powerful, emotional Richie Havens singing and playing a repertoire of great American songs, check out these recordings. –ALAN DOUGLAS (producer)
Before the Woodstock film brought him iconic status, Richie Havens was a distinctive presence on the Greenwich Village folk scene. He was a dramatic interpreter of both soul material (Down in the Valley,Drown in My Own Tears) and modern folk songs, as confirmed by the covers of Dylan’s Oxford Town and Boots of Spanish Leather included on this batch of early folk-rock recordings, the former song haunted by harmonica and Jew’s harp, the latter plumbing depths of oceanic sadness. –The Independent
