Conductor Valery Gergiev, at his finest in the repertoire featured here, and the Mariinsky Orchestra, celebrate the 19th c. Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky with the release of two of his most cherished works, Pictures at an Exhibition and Night on Bare Mountain (in it’s original version) alongside the composer’s Songs and Dances of Death (sung by Ferruccio Furlanetto), a work left in a shambolic, unpublished state at the time of his death, but now recognized as one of his major artistic accomplishments.

Recensione

**** A particularly rich and detailed performance of Mussorgsky s Pictures at an Exhibition, and a truly opulent Night on Bare Mountain. Pizzicato –Pizzicato

Gergiev conducts a penetrating Pictures at an Exhibition in an all-Mussorgsky disc that has Ferruccio Furlanetto singing Songs and Dances of Death. –Philly.com

‘Ravel’s brilliant if somewhat prettified version…suits Gergiev’s approach … A Night on the Bare Mountain is splendidly macabre’ John Warrack - Gramophone, April 2015 ———– Performance: (Pictures; A Night on a Bare Mountain) **** (Songs and Dances) ***** Recording: **** ‘The playing here is poised, uninflated, and vividly characterised … the major appeal of this release is an exceptional interpretation of the Songs of Dances and Death by Ferruccio Furlanetto. His mellow toned Italian bass, projected with superlative line and diction, offers a fine alternative to the heavy vocal artillery of Russian tradition … Excellently clear recorded sound enhances a release of real and anti-routine quality.’ –Malcolm Hayes - BBC Music Magazine, July 2015
