Recensione
One of the rarer joys of jazz is the discovery of new masterpieces by great players, sometimes recorded years before they became famous. Wes Montgomery fans should thus be fascinated to learn that tapes have just surfaced of the iconic guitarist, bootlegged in small Indianapolis clubs and theatres around 1957-8, with his brothers, pianist Buddy and bassist Monk, and other local heroes. Round Midnight, Straight No Chaser and Nica’s Dream reflect their familiarity with the Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis Quintet of that era, while ballad versions of Misty, Darn that Dream and Body and Soul find Wes’s lustrous sound already fully formed. The set-closer, a satirically lowdown slow blues, is the unique gem in this trove of long-buried treasure. JACK MASSARIK –April 13th 2012 London evening standard/http://www.thisislondon.co.uk
