Patti LaBelle (described as the “Godmother of Soul”) started her singing career in the early 1960s as lead singer and front woman of the vocal group, The Bluebelles. In the early 1970s, the group changed their name to Labelle and shortly after released the famous disco song “Lady Marmalade”. The group were the first African-American vocal group to land the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, and were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Patti LaBelle has also been described as “the greatest gay icon of all time and a prime example of the intersection of the LGBT community and black female artists”.
